Gents: I greatly
appreciate your feedback relative to my previous questions about building the
“ideal” panel for my IVP.
Thank you!
Hi John,
If I'm loosely included in the Gents list? I can
comment on some of your questions but it is qualified as IMHO, and "Ideal"
limited.
Jim Hergert L4P 400 Hrs.
I would appreciate your
feedback relative to the following:
1) How does the
Freeflight 1101/1201 compare to the Garmin 480? Lancair is telling me that
the 1101 is WAAS certified, but the freeflightsystems.com web site only says
that the 1201 is WAAS certified. It doesn’t mention the 1101. What
is up here?
I understand that the 480 uses the Freeflight GPS. That
said I think it is the difference in certified vs not certified. With an
Experimental you only need to comply with 146a which is the 5 times per second
GPS update to allow approaches to LPV min. about equal to ILS min. But I refer
you to Keith Thomassen, who would answer your question clearly; http://www.avionicswest.com/training/maintrainingpage.htm#IFR
2) How does the TruTrack
Sorcerer Autopilot compare with the STec 55X in capabilities? Which/what
autopilot would you recommend based on your experiences?
No comparison in my book. I have the TruTrak on my 4P
and love it. It is my ultimate back up and required for Flight level altitude
hold. Not that the 55X won't do that. But everyone I have talked to with an STec
say that they turn it off in Turbulence, and I never do with the TruTrak. It has
many features that the 55x doesn't have. However, the weak part was the front
panel, where the 55X has a great one, but the Sorcerer has made a big step
forward. The servos are way superior and the inflight adjusting, just to name a
few. I have even told my certified friends to leave there old STec AP installed
and install the TruTrak to really use and leave the old one for
compliance.
3) Which trim
systems do you recommend for the IVP. I have heard about “Ray Allen” and
“Precise Flight.” Which do you recommend and why?
I have the Precise Flight indicator and I like it a
lot. Don't know anything about RA. The PF has a switch to turn off a runaway
trim situation.
4) Would you choose
Garmin SL 30’s or 40’s and why?
The SL 30 has a full Nav with ILS, where the 40 is just
a com. Both have the excellent 8 watt Digital Signal transmitter, which is
much stronger than the competition and uses less input, therefore less heat. (I
think)
5) Why would someone
spend the extra bucks to go with a Chelton Pro system rather than the Chelton
Sport system?
No need after they get the Pinpoint GADAHRS. I have the
Pro with the Crossbow 500GA AHRS.
Attached is my humbly satisfyingly "Ideal"
panel.
Thanks in advance and best
regards,
