Rudolf:

Your English is excellent.  A lot better than our German!!!  No excuse
required.

<<<...Let's stay focused on aircraft spark ignition piston engines,
please....>>>

I can't agree. For my IV I am searching for an diesel engine.<<

No problem discussing diesels, but the previous thread of messages was
focused on spark ignition comparisons and durability of spark ignition
engines.

Diesels are different piece of fruit.
but my focus is the Volkswagen V10 TDI.
It is used in a new cross country car. This engine is able to deliver
310HP continous and has a torque of 750NM at 2500 RPM !! It needs
about 40l (10gallons) per hour. <<

Really ?   10 gallons of diesel per hour ?   About 60 lbs or so per hour?   10 gallons of diesel per hour at the  270 Hp you required of the 300+ Hp
diesel engine?

That is a Brake Specific of ~ 0.22 lbs fuel/hour/horsepower.

If true, that would be a technological advance unlike any other ever in the
history of internal combustion engine.

What is your opinion? Could this be an interesting engine and what are
the thing we have to pay attention for??<<

Diesel engines have peak combustion pressures up in the 1600 PSI range.
High power spark ignition engines are half that at cruise.

The resulting peak torsional loading on the crank and structures  are
serious engineering challenges for the prop and for any reduction gear box
connected to a prop.

Then, we have to ask how much it weighs.  So far, no diesel engine has ever
ended up with an acceptable "all up" installed weight.  So far. Regards,  George Braly
