If you guys would like to EXPERIMENT (now where have I heard that word before), you might try this. Those V-shaped antennas you see on the vertical stab are balanced antennas; they need no ground plane, They have a balun inside that transforms the unbalanced coax to the balanced antenna. This antenna is a little longer than the com antenna as it operates at a little lower frequency. The geometric mean frequency of VOR is 113.1MHz, and of comm is 127.9MHz. Cutting the V to the length of 113.1/127.9 and inserting it through the HORIZONTAL stab will give you an excellent balanced dipole with a true hemispherical radiation pattern with maximum radiation toward the horizon, not the reduced horizontal radiation of the counterpoise antenna with a finite (30") counterpoise. You could even put one on either side for a dual radio system to give a balanced appearance. "Course, this should only be tried by the real experimenters who are more interested in performance than having an unusual-appearing airplane.
