CNO-MCE-SCK-WVI and then WVI-CNO this morning. I'll have to download the pics of 122LL inverted at 12.5 chasing cumulous critters and post 'em. Besides doing 260 knots over the ground on the way home this morning (saw 278 for a few minutes!) the highlight of the trip came yesterday, a bit after rolling around in the "pillows"... Shortly after checking on with Lemoore Approach near Lemoore NAS I got a call for 3 Hornets at my 10 and 4 miles, 4500, turning towards me. Told approach I was looking but they were in the clouds. Heard him tell them to stop their climb at 8000 and identified me to the flight as cruising at 8.5. I scanned my left front quarter looking for the grey "single seat, big meat" fighters and after about 15 seconds of "no joy" I called again for range and bearing. "You targets are at one o'clock, less than a mile"....I looked to my right and just then they passed 500 ft. beneath me in tight formation. Crap! It happened so fast I didn't even have time to get my camera out! As they went through my 5 o'clock I realized I missed the big chance...to call "right-right, fights on!" and slice back to their six....followed by "Lemoore approach, splash 3 Hornets, 2 are in the silk at Bullseye 110 for 8 miles, launch CSAR!" sorry to let the brotherhood down... :)- Will share the story of the asymmetrical speed break deployment in another post.... 278 knots ground speed, straight and level.....what a beautiful thing!
