Re: N420HP Fuel Selector, Fuel Return, "Fuel Log"
Jeff
and anyone else out there,
Please
be careful here. I almost killed myself because of a setup IDENTICAL to
this - including the brand of fuel log.
This
is a BAD BAD BAD idea. That fuel log is too small. Fuel that is
returned to that small of a tank may get heated significantly - especially in
situations where you are idling on a hot day. The engine will only consume
a small amount of fuel, the rest is compressed (heated) and pushed through a
very hot under cowl environment. The fuel WILL get hot.
Then
one particularly hot day, as happened to me, you may end up with air bubbles,
vapor lock, or something similar, on TAKEOFF. It took weeks, and a
second similar event, to diagnose the problem. Put your hand on that
fuel log on a hot day after waiting 20 minutes for departure. You'll be
surprised. Better surprised than dead. Takeoff isn't a good time to
lose engine power.
Please
don't do this. Recirculate into a much larger tank.

Suggestion:
Regarding the fuel selector and single tank return, an alternate fix
would be to insert a "fuel log" into the return between the fuel selector and
the engine,
