The right things to use are a 25 watt soldering pencil and MS 27500 shielded cable with 24 gage conductors. I don't like to use anything but Tefzel or silicon insulation forward of the firewall for chemical and heat resistance reasons. The MS cable is also smaller, read lighter, than the factory stuff. It is also more expensive by a factor, preventing it's inclusion in the first place. Remember that the typical kit plane product is designed for the average kit plane. Lancairs are not average and their performance and price suggest that premium components be used throughout.
