  I'm a little late in seeing this, but your proposed modification will make a *world* of difference in getting the air out of your system.  In your "unmodified" drawing, you don't have a purge tank -
just two sequential surge/overflow tanks.    I've been studying my water pump housing in detail since this came up, and - although, in the end, I plan to use a thermostat - during early testing without it, I don't think I want to *completely* plug the bypass hole, but thread a plug into it that has a 1/8 - 1/4" aperature through it.
