Shorts to ground and shorts to adjacent pins can also happen. One builder was ready to pay my expenses to fix his EC2 problem (in California) after 8 months of non stop troubleshooting. I had my bags packed and ready to go when he called and canceled the trip. In a fit of frustration he had ripped out all the wiring and built a new harness. It ran fine after that. But thinking about your symptoms, I am again worried that they are due to massive electrical noise problems and not a wiring error or EC2 failure.
