I don't think it is much of a factor for any material other than carbon

steel.

Yeah, I’d agree; if you just have headers coming out into a collector.  I have these short pipes welded into the tangential muffler, which expands axially a fair amount more than the engine when running a nice glowing red. I’m guessing there are some pretty high stresses on the welds on #1 and #3 pipes.
