Bryan, being a welder since 1949, I would say no to a butt joint unless you 
could get a nice filler cap on top of the weld.  Off subject, during the 
30's depression, Dad was trying to aluminum solder (pot metal) a carburetor 
body, he had it heated nicely, but when he touched the filler rod to it, it 
collapsed and flowed off the edge of the work bench.  JohnD
