John, my radiators sit at an angle between 3" and 6" from the inlet.  Needless to say a bit on the short side for a diffuser.  My duct inlets are a integral part of my fiberglass diffuser duct, so I did not use any silicone (or any other connecting material).  However, putting the radiators back a bit further and using a silicone or other smooth (some folks have used diving suit material of some kind) material to minimize the transition from inlet to duct would be a smart way to go.
 
Others may have some more useful suggestions

Ed, how much distance did you use between the cowl and the radiator diffusers.  Also did you install a silicone belting cuff on the joint.  JohnD
