But it's not a benign failure mode and I've been through 2 used ones already. I'd really prefer to get a new or reconditioned part, or a suitable idler gear, if anyone can suggest where I might find one at a reasonable price.

I have an idler pully that you can have. I believe it was set up to replace the smog pump.
