Tracy probably has the longest flight time with a
spintech. Best I recall it was still doing fine when he took it off -
just couldn't stand its very dirty aerodynamic shape. I do not know
of one failing and it DOES NOT have any packing {:>)

How do the spin tech mufflers hold
up?

George,
You could be right about the strapping, but you can see the
white stuff oozing up through almost every hole in the perforated outer
shell. I figure that another 1/2 hour flight ought to just about
finish it off.
Also, from my previous history with the "auger" muffler, I should have
realized that 304ss wasn't up to the task. There are signs of
that already by the grey dust/powder inside the
muffler. Maybe Flowmaster will agree to make one out
of 321ss.

Mark,
I have been thinking about this and have come
to the conclusion that it isn't the packing material melting as I believe
that would more than likely turn to dust rather than melt.
It will more likely be some
glue or strapping that holds the packing material in place, before they
put on the outer shield.

Dennis,
The outside of the muffler did change color a little. Out of
the box it looked almost like polished stainless steel. Now it
still looks shiny, but it has a definite honey color to it. Yes, I
plan to fly it again. If the packing material melts, or gets
pulverized, so be it. As long as it hasn't lost its
structural integrity I will fly it. Of course, if it gets too loud
for the ANR to handle the noise, or if people start to complain, then
I'll change it out. I'm growing weary of working on the exhaust
system. It is still quieter than the "auger" muffler.
Your system may be easier on the HP-2 due to 1) side port
exhaust, 2) stock exhaust manifold, 3) tangential
muffler and 4) more distance from the exhaust port to the
muffler. I may have to rethink my design to increase
the distance between the exhaust port and muffler. The
instructions did warn that the muffler would get very hot due to some
engineering double-speak. Little did I know that it would spill
its guts on the hangar floor.
Yes, come on down. Best BBQ for miles
around.

My muffler never gets "HOT"

seen EGT numbers in the low 1800s while at full throttle and running

performance. So far no one has said my muffler is louder than my
first flight. I never expected the HP - 2 to work or
anything but the Renesis - but I did not expect to see "stuff" melting
and dripping out either. Mark - are you going to fly it
again as is or what is your plan - I may want to fly over to Lockhart
and watch! I am ready for more Barbecue also! Dennis

Mark,
Did the stuff get on the bottom of your
plane? Has this affected the sound of your exhaust? Did
Dennis' muffler do this?
I noticed his muffler had a white coating on
the outside like it had been hot. Has yours turned
color?
I wonder how hot the muffler gets at high
power settings? Didn't you say something about a hand held
temp gage?

OK, I can see this is going
nowhere. So I guess I'll have to tell you. This is
what came out of my new HP-2 muffler after a short 20 minute
flight. What you saw in the previous picture was the packing
material MELTING and dripping out the end of the muffler. In
the second picture, you can see it oozing out of the little holes in
the intermediate housing. I was expecting it to "blow out"
eventually, but I wasn't expecting it to melt and run out the
tailpipe. This just blows my mind. Where to go from
here??? Maybe I should replace the packing with titanium
shavings, or lithium crystals.
