It's easy to square what you see if you consider that Paul is very helpful as long as you agree with him. You pay for his help by stroking, or appearing to stroke, his ego. For a lot of guys, that is more valuable than food or water. His behavior is explained as an attempt to attain demigod status. Be a friend. Enjoy his company. But when you eventually disagree and he starts blowing hot air, shrug your shoulders and move on.
