Hi Joe,

My suggestion of using an MOV in this particular circumstance only came from my limited knowledge of their typical use as a flyback device to keep switch contacts from getting burned up.  I knew, also, that they had a pretty quick response time, so I thought they were worth mentioning.  If it turns out that MOVs help solve Tracy's problems and my mention of them helped get him therer a tad quicker, well, yippeeee!!! that's one in a row <g>. If, OTOH, it turns out there's a better solution, well, that's fine too... I never claimed to be an EE, but at least I was willing to stand up and be heard.

Passing along knowledge is what FlyRotary has been about since its inception.  I'm pretty outspoken and know a reasonable amount about a lot of things, so when I spout off I always do it in deference to those out there who obviously know more about that given topic.  Unlike "that other list", there has never been a removal of anyone's subscription simply for speaking their mind, and as long as I'm in charge, there won't be.  This goes double for anytime I'm proven wrong.. I spend more time learning here than most of you <g>.  If FlyRotary ever deteriorates into a one idea, one solution soapbox I'll be the first to let everyone know that it's no longer a viable forum and that it's ready for the closing of its virtual doors.

Like any solid state device an MOV is subject to degradation (quickly if the
power through it is greater than its heat dissipation capacity). Further,
unlike many other solid state devices that fail in the off state when they
loose their internal smoke - a MOV can fail in the ON state.

Sincerely,
Joe (Hoping I have not offended anyone, or be banned from FlyRotary like so
many others have been from the other list.)
