Hey
Guys!
I
finally got flying again today and it was about time but worth it. I will divide
the days events over 3 e-mails according to subject matter. The first of course
is the use of boost. You may recall that on my initial test flights where boost
was limited to 0, I was less than impressed with ROC and considered that I was
way overpropped. Well with 7psi added to the mix I feel very satisfied. I don't
have a VSI yet so I didn't measure initial ROC but it was very improved. We
climbed to 7500 and did a few top speed tests and got a true airspeed of 185mph,
but I don't believe we had the prop pitch optimized. A big priority will be to
calibrate the electronic constant speed governor to ensure we are running best
pitch. The weather was kinda crappy but we finally got a big hole in the layer
right above the airport and climbed up to 10K then timed the climb to 12K and
got 1000fpm ROC with 2 guys in the cockpit and ~10 gals fuel so about 1630
lbsGW. On a second flight we timed the climb from ground - 2200' up to
5200' and got 3000' in 2min 15 secs or 1333fpm at 100 mph. This is still not
stellar but a drastic improvement. Tomorrow we will try a climb at 120mph and
expect even better results. We recorded a few more numbers but forgot them at
the airport so I can't remember many other numbers to pass
along.
Reading Rusty's latest e-mail's about cracks. I have a series 4 turbo and
while I've not done a microscopic internal inspection, it does appear to be
sound. I can assure you that the manifold is crack free, as after my first
flight last month I had an exhaust leak which I first suspected may be a crack
in the manifold as I'd heard much about them so I removed and very closely
inspected it and found it to be crack free.
Whooooheeee, it's great to fly again.
