My .02: Buy it and have a 3rd party go through it, like Bruce Turrentine.

Hi Michael,
Mark was a member of my Lancair Mail List all during the time he was talking
about doing the 20B in his ES. I can tell you that Mark is an honorable man,
a good builder, and someone you can trust. I met both him and Lisa at a
couple of the fly-ins and remember him to be a pretty good guy. (I know, that
and a buck will buy you part of a cup of coffee, but it's the truth. <g>) As
for the engine, I spoke to Dave Atkins about it several years ago when I
visited him in WA while picking up some stuff for my RX7 and the 13B for my
L360. Since Dave put that particulat package together, a requisite part of
your due diligence should include talking with him about it. I know he was
very proud of it after he'd done his part and was pretty involved in whatever
changes Mark did, if memory serves. You could certainly do far worse than
purchasing that package, as much of the aggravation has aleady been handled
with the engine mount, and many of the accessories. That's what I know for
now. If anything else comes to mind I'll let you know.

I'm an on-again, off-again lurker for the past five years and I'm building a
Lancair ES. In my heart I've always wanted to use a 20b, but I'd almost
resigned myself to an IO-500 when I came across an ad for a used 20b with 50
hours on it, built by Atkins. It's being sold by Mark Lally in North
Carolina, who has made a few changes since he bought it. The engine has
been on the market for a while and he's offering it at a good price. Before
I commit to purchasing and shipping it cross country to California I thought
I'd check with the members of the list to see if anyone knows anything about
this engine, or about the gentleman who is selling it. All our interactions
have been via email and Mr. Lally has been very helpful, so I want to make
sure that nobody thinks I have any reason to doubt him, I'm just trying to
do my homework and be an informed buyer.
I can provide a photo and details on what I'm supposed to receive to anyone
who is interested in providing an opinion, but as a newcomer I didn't know
if it was "proper" to post all that info to the list. Contact me directly
at michael@aeromotogroup.com
Thanks in advance for any help. I look forward to becoming another member
of the rotary aviation community.
