Little did I know that there had been a fatal long-EZ accident on base-to-final 15 min earlier.

A tragic day – a friend lost. Dan Patch, who had flown his varieze for 24 years, was the safety officer of our local EZ-squadron (canard aircraft club) crashed yesterday on approach to Brown field in San Diego.  Dan has done a lot of teaching of formation flying and was a very experienced pilot.  He was on approach with another varieze.  All I know is the words of his wife’s e-mail, “He apparently went below another eze that he was flying with and didn't make it.”  Our sympathies are with his wife, son, and daughter.
