IF your tanks has the external tank vent line that Van calls for - is it possible that during your fuel transfer that you may have transfer sufficient fuel to over fill the one tank and to cause some excess fuel to flow out the vent line? Recall the vent line exits (at least on my RV-6A) right behind the bottom of the cowling. That's what I would bet on.
