    It looks like you have about the same clearance as I did. I tried to find a picture that would show mine clearly, but this is the best I could find. It should work OK for you.

My turbo didn't come with a heat shield, and I never really looked into using the stock shield because I just didn't believe it will fit.  Now that I've looked at the Mazda parts document, I think it might.  How close to the turbo is the heat shield on the engine side?  I probably have less than half an inch of space between the turbo and intake at some points.  I'll attach a couple pics, and maybe you can tell me if you think it would fit.
