You had me freaking out because I don't remember any such washer....
 
Yet, you hit the nail on the head once again...  At least you know your stuff.  The failure is indeed the pin in the sun gear.  I am not sure which version I have, but it looks to me like the pin broke in shear.  There is nothing to see from the outside and I think I have the pin version not the welded version.  I will send a picture shortly for you to verify.  Either way, it is the 2 halves of the sun gear that are no longer connected.

Poo..  Brain fade.  Ignore everything I said earlier.  I was thinking you had a -C drive already. 
 
Tracy  (back to square 1 on failure hypothesis)
 
Next possible thing is rosette weld failure on sun gear.  I switched to drilled & pined gear some time ago when I thought of this as a possible failure mode.  Which do you have Dave?  Backfire *would* be the most likely thing to induce that.
