Ya' know, John, this is exactly what I thought when I read his account.

The magazines always like to print articles that Bob Knuckles refer to 
as 'dark-n-stormy night' stories.  Usually they boil down to the 
equivalent of, "We noticed something not quite right, but we gleefully 
launched into hard IFR at 6:30pm in January anyway!!"  We never hear, 
"We noticed something not quite right, so we pulled over to carefully 
check it out."
