All good advice from Lynn on finding TDC and other timing points.
 
Another thing to consider is that the "static timing" on the EC2 (and possibly others) has nothing to do with the time that the spark occurs on a running engine.  It is just a reference point for the computer which uses a bunch of factors to determine when to make the spark.  The 2 pointed trigger (on 2nd gen engines) should line up with the sensor when the crank is at 35 deg BTDC on Rotor 1  for EC2 controllers.
 
I don't know what other controllers require.
