George, I have built many racing engines with at most a blow off valve for high pressure. You must be carefull not to race the engine when cold or you can damage something. I have exploded several oil filter canisters. Some type of bypass prevents operator error. If anybody but you will ever run the engine building somekind of idiot proofing is a good idea.
