You've just expressed the flip side of something I mutter almost every working day. If I were "king of the world" one of my first decrees would be that NO ONE would be allowed to graduate from a school of engineering ... until they had served a "residency" (like MD's have to do) -- two years as a field service tech, THEN we'll let them design things that people have to use, or work on.
Believe me, after 30+ years in field service, it's easy to spot the products that were designed by someone with "real world" experience.

I am forever grateful that I spent several years as a machinist prior to getting a job in mechanical engineering. It is ALWAYS helpful to know if a thing can be manufactured!
