Bill, if you're going to eliminate all the 'stuff' and the port will always be open, why not remove the wall between the side ports and make them one?
Without any doubt, I know that the stock intake makes 247 HP with all the valves wide open. Since I already have a design that I know works, I'm planning to make my replacement intake identical to the stock intake, but without the valves. Of course, I plan to make the turns a bit tighter to move the runners closer to the top of the cases (to clear the top of the cowling.)
The stock intake has a valve that joins the two primary runners at ~12.5 inches when open, and ~19 inches when closed. Since they went through all this trouble, this tells me that it is very important to keep them separate, then join them at 12.5 inches, if I want to make 247 HP.
There are two ports below the secondary ports (the 5th and sixth port, I suppose) that are valved off at idle and then are combined with the primary ports at the 12.5 inch point. This is one more clue that I should keep all the "primary" timed ports separate for 12.5 inches.
