From 4 yrs of testing electronic telecom gear in a factory, my experience is that finding an intermittent open is always shear luck.
I don't know how much work it would be or how much you trust the rest of it, but I learned to be trigger happy with throwing away cables. They were cheap and didn't merit the headaches of dealing with them.
