Since - at this point - every installation is in some way unique, the failure *rates* are meaningless. One can pretty much ignore his pronouncements - except as they apply to specific components, rather than the whole system.
His statements about modifications are also not germaine. He's running a Subaru engine, and with very little foreknowledge I can still guarantee that his engine is heavily modified from how it is installed in a car. What he should have said (and I'm sure he meant), was that modifications to proven designs are risky. Unfortunately our list of proven designs is very short (but quickly growing), so there are still times when there is no other option but to try something different and hence dangerous. That isn't newsworthy or controversial here. We are all painfully aware of it and have each accepted the experimental nature of what we're doing (or unloaded the project and moved on).
I think the real risk here is that Al will damage what I have found to be a stellar reputation by imitating the idiots on the evening news and blathering around like the sky is falling.
Al, if your listening, we know the risks we take are deadly. If you have specific information that will mitigate any of that risk, we will be forever in your debt for sharing. If all you have is loud, screeching pronouncements of impending doom, then you will be seen as an unoriginal nuisance and a very irritating background noise. From the information you have shared before, I don't believe the latter, so please share the work you have in progress before someone pays the ultimate price. No one gets knocked on this list for half-baked ideas or incomplete work (and I for one should know better than most), so please don't feel like you have to create a professional presentation for our sake.
