Bill, is there any way to determine if the motor is quality or a piece of junk?  The link to the eBay auction was for a scooter motor.

        It was for a brush scooter motor. Cheap brush motors have crappy commutators and brushes that wear out quickly.

        There is no commutator or brushes in a permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PM BLDC). The only thing to wear out is the bearings. These are generally not a problem, but if they are found to be a problem, you can typically drop in high quality replacement bearings easily.
