Subject: [FlyRotary] We have=20 ignition

Greetings,

I finally got to fire it = up=20 today.  Overall, it was a pretty successful first run (several=20 runs).  There are a number of leaks, and I fixed some = already. =20 Tomorrow, when it cools, I=92ll fix the rest.  The tach doesn=92t = work, and=20 neither did my optical tach, so I was just guessing at the = speed. =20

The worst problem is = probably due=20 to my proximity to Tommy.  He=92s somehow passed along his fuel = injector=20 curse to me :-)   Let me just repeat what others have said, = if you=20 are even THINKING about NOT installing the optional switches to test = the=20 injectors, reach up and slap yourself now :-)   When I turn = off the=20 primary injectors, the engine is smooth as silk, but when they=92re = on, it=92s=20 ugly.  I=92m betting that I broke one of those connections when I = was=20 bending the wires around to fit in the connector.  Sure hope I = don=92t have=20 to pull the injectors.

I do have the turbo = installed, and=20 I have to agree with Todd.  The engine, with nothing but a = straight pipe=20 from the turbo, is no louder than a Lycoming.  It might even be=20 quieter.  I actuated the manual wastegate while running at about = 2000=20 rpm, and can hear the difference in sound, but it=92s not all that=20 significant.

The alternator (stock=20 3rd gen 100A RX-7) is working fine, but my idea of trying = to turn=20 off the excitation current didn=92t pan out.  The charge voltage = is 14.7 in=20 normal mode, but it goes to about 16V when I turn off my switch.  = I tried=20 turning off the master, which disconnects the alternator from the = essential=20 buss, and the voltage on the non essential side spiked to 18V. =20 Realistically, this probably won=92t kill anything, but I haven=92t = decided what I=20 want to do about it.  I may add another contactor for the purpose = of=20 killing the alt output.  Need to think about this some = more. =20

That=92s enough for = now. =20 Again, I=92m pretty happy with the first run.  I even have it on = video=20 :-)
