If the seals were soft either by design for failure in the
manufacturing process, then the wear and lost of material in a critical area
of the seal combined with side forces due to the worn slot were probably
not a combination due for long life.
Has anyone heard what
sort of reputation the Hurley's have in RX-7's? I'm sure we're stressing
them more overall than what the average car does, but you would still think
people would report early failures if the seals were too soft. Some of the
RX-7's are putting out big HP numbers, but of course you can't do that for long
on the street without ending up dead or in jail. In fact, I sold my FD to
avoid the inevitable outcome :-)
Add my congrats to your
engine restoration. I wish you had better weather to install it, but we
take what we can get. I didn't fly at all this weekend, partly because of
the strong (cross) winds, and partly because the Navy was stinking up "my"
airspace trying to catch up on training lost due to the hail damaged
aircraft.
Good
luck,
Rusty
