However, I

hold the two type plugs up for a comparison and they appeared the same

Are you sure your
plugs are not B9EGV? As near as I can find, NGK does not make a B9EQV.
I am using the B9EGV
in my 20B – 3rd gen turbo housings. I don’t know
if there is a difference in the allowed plug depth in other housings.
