Hi Bill,
As Rusty said, both he and Todd are using Davies Craig units (which I
supplied). While not having used them on aircraft myself, I've been using
them on race cars for several years with 100 % reliability. I know of
literally hundreds of other racers here in Oz that use them without
problems.
Todd proved that Lamar's illicit "number running" racket was all based on
dubious
premises. He REALLY went out on a limb on that one. Badly libelled my good
friend Richard Davies from Davies Craig as being a scam artist.
But I've never seen an apology or retraction. Moreover, there are probably
still nearly 1000 ACRE accolytes
(and some on here too) who still faithfully believe Lamar's BS about EWPs,
not to mention a whole raft of other furphies (don't get me started!!).
I will concede that some of the early pumps DID have a shaft seal issue,
but some
time ago Davies Craig changed the design to a full ceramic face seal. I
currently have a pair of EWPs in series (just for redundancy - one cools the
320 BHP bridgeport just fine) on one of our race cars. One is wired through
a speed controller to assist in rapid warm-ups,
and the other kicks in only at WOT (via a switch on the acc pedal). There
is also a manual over-ride switch that allows both to be turned on
cotinuously for actual racing.
Please understand that I certainly wouldn't risk a $15K race engine if I
had ANY doubts about their reliability. They are powered by printed circuit
brushless motors, and the water seal issue was addressed a long time ago
(they now have ceramic face seals just like a stock Mazda pump), so there
really isn't anything to fail.
You will notice that by using the EWPs, it gave me unrestricted access
to make a really big cold air box and filter set-up, something I could
never do with the conventional pump in place. Additionally, there are no
belts (only the 2 alternator drive belts - dual sheave pulley). Maybe if
this
Racemate PM alternator stuff works out, I can get rid of them as well. So
count me in.
Cheers,
Leon

The bigger issue is clearance. With the two units and EWP,
I won't need a belt.
Ernest, I have always wondered about the EWP. While I'm not a Lamar
reactionary, I would like to know if anybody is NOW FLYING with an EWP as
their primary water pump. This is not intended to start an arguement, it's
just a question.
