Subject: [FlyRotary] 2nd Flight with
Monster prop
Got my second flight in with the 76x88 prop
today. Did not have a 18 kt cross wind so take offs were nowhere near as
exciting as the previous flight.
I have tried full throttle takeoffs and slowly
feeding in the throttle. Full throttle take offs are manageable but
requires just about all the right rudder I have and even then the aircraft
starts crabbing immediately on lift off. Feeding the throttle in slowly
takes a bit more runway (but still much less than my old prop), but is
uneventful compared to the immediate full throttle take off.
I have a full ball right deflection when straight
and level, so it looks Like I am going to need to modify my motor mount to
take out the left off-set I had in for the old 2.17 gear box.
But, I love it. For the first time ever I
saw my VSI pegged at 2000 fpm UP!. True it was a little bit of a zoom in
that I started the climb at 140IAS and stabilized it at 120 IAS. But,
the steady state ROC was a solid 1600 fpm which is about 500-600 fpm better
than previously and that was at 1650 lbs.
I still might be a bit over-propped in that my
static is 5600 rpm which what it was with the old prop and 2.17.
I'll have to check with the prop manufacture to see what effect removing an
inch or so would have on static rpm.
Cooling was as reported for the first
flight. My total radiator inlet area of 28 sq inches works fine.
Cruise airspeed burning 7.5-8 gph has the oil and coolant at 170F. WOT
throttle burning 16 GPH (on take off) and 11-12 GPH at 5000 msl will have the
oil and coolant increase to 200F and 205F respectively today OAT was
80F.
I plan on flying to Charlie England's Flyin in
Mississippi next weekend. Hope to see some of you there.
Best Regards
Ed
