Rob,

I use a water softener in my home so I have to have regular supplies of
granular salt.  These turned out to be the ideal recyclable weights for
Lancair building.  They can be purchased in small and large sizes in robust
plastic sacks or decanted in to smaller polythene bags for smaller jobs.

They to not weigh quite as much as lead shot but the granules are smaller
so they "blend" to curves better.  When finished with you can sell them on
to water softener users, defrost the pavement/drive outside your house in
winter, or use them in the dishwasher/water softener.  Salt worked for me
and I still keep a few sacks in the hangar when I need to weigh down the
tail for gear checks and maintenance.

Happy landings,

michael
