If Lancair had really wanted to remove some weight from the 320, have you
noticed how HEAVY the main gear aluminum wheel mount castings are?
Almost all of the stress is in the area of the 90 degree bend. The entire
casting could have been one-third as thick and the bend "webbed" to regain
the strength in that area (the weight savings would equal a LOT of aluminum
washers).
