Dan, I share your concern. I'm about 9 months away from needing an engine
for my ES #4 and I've been going thru the same thought process. Should I
buy a new IO-550 at $35k and run the risk of no fuel available in the post
2005 period?
With no fuel the engine is worthless and the market value of the airplane is
in the toilet. Maybe I should look for a good used IO-520 or even a late
model IO-470 to minimize my losses while I wait for new engine alternatives
to develop. Who knows, there may be a genuine 250-350 BHP turbine engine
available in that time frame. Two weeks ago I was absolutely committed to
the purchase of a new IO-550, but now I honestly don't know what to do.
This whole discussion has put a huge damper on my project enthusiasm.
