Here is a very good description from the british LAA about flying abroad in europe: There is a agreement of most european countries called ECAC to make cross country flights easy. You might need special permission for certain countries which is easy to get. They want to see the insurance, permit to fly and the pilot licence, and maybe a little fee.
In Austria IFR for experimentals is possible!! A certified avionic shop has to do the installation and papers!
There are many Lancairs around in Europe!
Nothing difficult to fly experimentals in europe...

I copied the text below form a post in the Diamond Aviators Forums by a fellow who lives in Switzerland and is based at LSGL (Lausanne Blecheret Airport, Suisse).
"The experimental world is fascinating, and I would have taken the plunge long ago. Now listen to this sad news:
Here in Europe, Experimental means you have to renew the permit to fly EVERY YEAR, for EVERY COUNTRY you intend to visit. And forget about IFR or even night VFR...
Lucky americans.."
I had no idea that the rules in Europe on experimentals is so onerous. So I assume there aren’t many Lancairs based in Europe.
