Hi Bill,

Do you measure the force of the canopy gas struts before replacing them?  Lancair can tell you the minimum rated force and pressing one down on a bathroom scale will tell you if it needs replacing.  What is your Legacy's serial number?  Mine is #257 and has the "heavy canopy" design, which is normal, due to Lancair changing the geometry to reduce firewall deflection with a closed canopy.  I haven't changed my canopy gas struts in the seven years I've been flying because they are still as charged as when new.

I have had a couple of instances where the wind blew the canopy down while I had my arm outside the cockpit.  The last time is the closest I have ever come to having a broken arm!  Damn that hurt!  Took weeks for the knot to go away on my forearm.

We could use a better gas strut for this application.  I have already replaced them twice and have another pair ready to do it again.  They are especially bad in cold weather.
