Gas struts are sometimes used on aircraft because they are lighter or more compact than the equivalent steel coil spring. They can also be designed to have some damping capability.
On the other hand, they leak, lose force with time, and lose force with low temperatures.

When the failure of the gas spring causes a safety hazard (LEG2 canopy), or the possibility of airframe damage (LNC4 nosegear), it seems to me that more more reliable alternatives should be considered. Steel torsion springs and coil springs are a viable and reliable alternative.
The benefits could be improved safety, and one less thing to worry about or routinely replace.
