Be sure to define radii around the various airports, pertinent VOR's corridor widths to and from specific areas, etc.,etc. ad nauseum and put it all in a letter requesting same. Additionally, in the letter requesting the larger test area, include the justification for the request, e.g., the speed of the Lancair and the difficulty of getting any useful data in the standard and restricted test area, plus anything else that makes sense. I did this for my 235 back in '93 at the Camarillo airport (Calif.) with the DAR out of Santa Barbara by the name of Don Stratman. He fully agreed with my request and the reasons for it. However, he remarked that by making the request in writing and submitting it along with all the other paper work, it made granting the larger test area simple. Having a reasonably sized test area certainly allows time to get some real testing done rather than spending too much time minding your location to be sure you don't violate the assigned test area. Believe me, if it makes sense for a 235, it goes double for a 360 or a L-IV and you must take the initiative to obtain a logical test area.
