Thanks for the responses.  I had posted the question on Monday night, but it didn't make it in the Tuesday Digest (that is the only way I get the LML).  So... last night my impatient personality motivated me to "map out" the baggage door hinge to see why my custom built one wouldn't work.  Once I had all the geometry right, I tested it on the bench and it worked great.  I actually found out how critical some of the dimensions are to get the concept to work, and tried multiple settings on the bench until getting the most travel I could.

The hinge support got bonded in last night.

Thanks for all the feedback though.  Steve's suggestion will be used for my engine access door when I get that far.

I elected to use a surface mounted door lock because I don't want to crawl back in the plane when I forget to open it for fueling.  I also like a lock I can see and operate from the outside.  KISS

Last year while talking with Craig Berland at Oshkosh I asked him why he didn't use a remote baggage door lock when so many other areas of his plane had been modified.  He made a statement that has become a very motivating reminder for me on this project.  "Time was running out on the amount of years I could enjoy this thing as a flying airplane.  I realized I needed to quit reinventing the wheel and get the thing done".

I installed the factory lock system while installing the baggage door a couple weeks ago.
