The Reichel system uses 4 gear sets and a sector to transfer the motion of the wheel to the output shaft. A much simpler and lighter system would utilize a small cable wrapped around the axle of the wheel several times, then stretched around an idler pulley several inches away. The idler arm is attached to the cable between the wheel and the idler pulley. The ratio of movement is varied by diameter of the axle and the distance from pivot point of the idler arm to the attach points of the cable and the output shaft. The output shaft controls the spring tension on the elevator pushrod exactly like the original Lancair plans. Anyone with a lathe can make the wheel in an hour, other parts are made from scraps.
