VM&P Naphtha available at Home Depot, etc. is a great cleaning solvent for most painted surfaces.  It is very effective on oil and does a fair job on wax.  This stuff is highly volatile so it dries fast and is flammable (think gasoline) you need to be careful.  A couple of lifetimes ago I sold it by the tank car.

I used doubleside tape to attach the trim tab.  Didn't rough up either surface, but I wiped them clean with a solvent.
