If the display does not recognize the Smart Media SSFDC card it may be because of a known issue with some cards. When the system powers up the BIOS looks to see if a valid SSFDC card is present. If the SSFDC card controller is not fully awake at this point the BIOS assumes there is not card and boots into Flight rather than Ground mode. The work around is to perform a "Hot Boot" by simultaneously pressing both knobs for three seconds (until the screen goes blank). This sends a CTRL+ALT+DEL reboot command to the processor but does not power cycle the SSFDC controller guaranteeing a good card will be recognized.
SSFDC cards can become damaged if they are removed with the system powered up. Sometimes they can be repaired if you use and older laptop and reformat selecting the FAT-16 format option.
