Been watching this discussion with interestŠ..
 
For the Legacy system (and may this could work for the other types):-
-How about a separate adjustable pressure relief valve
-Installed between the HP side and the return line
-Say adjustable range 1000-1500psi or thereabouts
 
Finding a reliable/light weight valve may be tricky, but would something
like this help?
