Angier,
If your filter does not receive oil, whether it is cold or warm, you have
incorrectly plumbed the oil lines. Only oil to the cooler should be
affected by the Vernatherm.
Use the manufacturer's recommendation for "break-in" oil.
Any amount of oil between 5 quarts and at or below 8 will be OK for
now.
If you never moved the crankshaft during the years your engine was not
operating, then the upper part (camshaft and cams) could be dry. Consult
an engine mechanic.
Then, start the darn thing....

In
preparation for first engine start (Lycoming IO360), I'll be draining
preservation oil and replacing with mineral oil and the question is how much
to put in...
If I add to the 6qt level on the dipstick, the oil lines plus
the cooler and Air Wolf filter will be empty and should stay that way
theoretically, until the Vern-a-therm valve opens at 180deg. So initially, is
6qts too much, just right? And in this day and age, is straight mineral oil
still the way to go?
The engine was run for 1hr at the Lycoming factory
when new.
