Thanks Lorn-
The plugs I'm using include some factory reconditioned (military surplus?) Champion RHB38W plugs. I had assumed they were Platinum but it turns out they're Iridium. The label inside the sealed plastic container calls for .019 gap.

The Champion website has a service manual (AV6-R) for download that goes into construction, care & maintenance of spark plugs: http://www.championaerospace.com/assets/AV6-R-Nov2004.pdf . According to that, you're correct in that Iridium lasts longer, has better scavenging, and resists lead attack better than standard platinum plugs.

As a side note, this link might be of interest and might start a new thread: http://www.championaerospace.com/assets/Champion-Fine-Wire-Spark-Plug-Service-Letter.pdf . Regards- Bill Wade

Bill,

I am not a spark plug expert but all fine wire plugs went through the platinum stage and then on to iridium. If you get the Champion fine wire gap gauge, you will see that platinum plugs gap at .015" and iridiums gap at .024". Why? I don't know for sure but I have to guess that there must be less resistance in the iridium. The larger gap also should lighting the fire better. The post that sticks out to gap to the center post has a smaller diameter on the iridium plugs.

What's the problem with platinum? I'm running fine wires in both my IO-550 and TCM IO-360.

I haven't noticed any problems after 300+ hours on each one. -Bill Wade
