There are a number of us AME's on the ListServ.  You can also find out which AME's in your region are pilots via the FAA.gov website and search engine for AMEs. And a lot of medical-flying questions can be answered at http://www.AviationMedicine.com.

Regardless of your friend's illness and your conversation with the AME, it would be best to have the pilot himself talk directly to the AME (without completing paperwork).  Most AMEs (including his local ones) are approachable off record to discuss the issue.

Once he creates the paperwork for his next medical, he's in the system.  If he does not complete the medial form and never was denied a medical certificate, then he can operate under Light Sport.
