Bob,
Haven't flown yet but have added a piece of metal screen door material (the
wire screen - not the plastic stuff) over the front of the cooler. I'M told
that this will prevent the problem you have documented. Hopefully and from
what I've been told this will not inhibit the airflow significantly, but
will dissipate the energy of raindrops or other precip enough to prevent the
bending of the fins.
It's a slightly difficult job to separate the cooler from the RTV gluing it
to the baffle. Then you have to tease the piece of screen into the space
between. Once there you have to pry the baffle and intercooler apart enough
to squeeze more RTV into the gap and then bolt it back together.
A fair amount of cursing accompanied the task for me and a few of the wires
in the screen are slightly distorted now the task is completed. The cleanup
of RTV was much easier than I suspected it would be and I'm happy with the
result - especially if it proves to work as advertised.

Subject: [LML] IV-P third intercooler
IV-P gang
The intercooler mounted on the front of the engine that is exposed to direct
airflow has become pretty well closed off after 1800 hours of use. The
small fins have bent due to the occasional rain shower and meaty bug so the
airflow thru it is not so good anymore. it's not a major problem but
Arizona heat means I need all of the cooling efficiency I can get.
My question is, do they make a more robust replacement? Are there any
tricks out there to keep it flowing nicely? I have spent some time with a
toothpick trying to bend the fins back to normal, but this doesn't last more
than a flight. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob R
